Frequently Asked Questions

(1) Will I be assigned an advisor, and will I be able to communicate with that person on a regular basis?

Yes. Coastline has academic counselors assigned specifically to support students in military programs. A counselor may be contacted toll free at 1-866-4CCCMIL x16320, direct at 1-714-241-6320, or e-mail militarycounselor@cccd.edu . Coastline also has a SOC Evaluation Unit that provides SOCNAV, SOCMAR, SOCCOAST & SOCAD agreements for military students. You may contact an evaluation specialist toll free at 1-866-422-2645 or e-mail SOC@mail.ccc.cccd.edu

(2) How much of the degree has to be taken through Coastline to meet residency requirements?

Coastline requires students to take 12 semester hours of coursework to establish residency. This includes distance learning courses.

(3) Will courses from other colleges transfer into your school degree plan?

Yes. Coastline recognizes college credit earned at any institution of higher education which is accredited by one of the regional accrediting associations of schools and colleges as identified by the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. Guaranteed transfer of courses exists with other colleges in the SOCNAV, SOCAD, SOCCOAST and SOCMAR networks.

(4) How will classes be delivered?

Most courses are CD/Internet. Other delivery methods will include video, live videoconferencing, and independent study. Students who enroll in these delivery methods interact with their instructors via phone, e-mail or fax. Students mail-in or take quizzes on line, and take examinations by proctor. Courses may also be supported with textbooks, written materials, electronic bulletin boards and other support systems.

(5) Is there a placement test?

Placement tests are recommended for students who wish to pursue a degree from Coastline and required prior to enrollment in an English or Math class.  It is recommended that you schedule your placement testing prior to the end of your first semester of enrollment and no later than eight (8) weeks prior to enrolling in a Math or English course.  For more information about placement testing go to the Math and English Assessment page.

(7) Do you have study guides for the courses offered?

Yes. All courses have student handbooks which are available on-line, on CD or in print to all students enrolled.

(8) Do I have to own a computer to do distance learning?

Yes.  Access to a computer is necessary for distance learning courses.

(9) Does your school accept credits from foreign institutions?

Coastline is unable to evaluate foreign transcripts. International students are encouraged to utilize the Credentials Evaluation Service provided by the International Research Foundation, Inc. Although the agency charges a fee for the service, the expense is usually much less than repeating the courses at an American institution of higher education. Coastline will accept the official evaluation and will count the units and/or degrees toward the student's educational program.

(10) Can I take CLEP and other tests for credit towards a degree?

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) and DANTES tests (DSSTs): Coastline recognizes examination programs and awards credit based on the subject area and the individual's test score. The appropriate number of units will be posted to the student's transcript upon completion of 12 units at Coastline. CLEP scores will count toward the Associated in Arts Degree under Option I. They will not count toward Options II or Option III, or CSU or IGETC certification. A maximum of 40 credit hours can be accepted from passing scores on both CLEP and DANTES tests. Coastline accepts scores of 490 or higher for General Exams and 50 or higher for Subject Exams.

(11) Can I continue my degree while on tour?

Yes. As a member of the eArmyU program, Coastline already delivers courses to soldiers throughout the world.

(12) How many courses can I take at a time?

Coastline recognizes 19 units as a maximum load during the Fall and Spring semesters (this would equate to no more than 3 courses per 8-week session, and nine units during the Summer session). Coastline discourages students from taking more than two (2) courses per 8 week session, unless recommended by a counselor. Students who wish to carry units beyond the maximum load must petition with the military counselor.

(13) How do I apply for grants/financial aid?

Federal Financial Aid may be available through grants and loan programs. In general, to qualify for aid you must be enrolled in 6.0 units each semester and demonstrate financial eligibility through the regular application process. Receiving reimbursement through the Tuition Assistance program does not disqualify any student from applying for financial aid. You can reach Coastline's Financial Aid Department by calling (714) 241-6239 Monday through Thursday from 8 am to 5 pm Pacific time, and Fridays from 8 am to 2 pm Pacific time. Just identify yourself as a military contract education student!

(15) Does your school offer scholarships to military and family members?

Scholarships are available to all Coastline students and are granted to students who have demonstrated excellence, academic achievement and/or wish to pursue educational or career goals. Scholarship awards are granted each spring semester. For more information go to Financial Aid & Scholarship page.

(16) How do I use my VA benefits?

Coastline is approved by the Bureau of School Approvals, California State Department of Education, to offer programs to veterans and eligible persons seeking benefits under the Federal Public Laws and the California Veterans Educational Laws. Coastline follows the guidelines issued by the Council for Private and Post Secondary and Vocational Education which apply to all institutions enrolling veterans and other eligible persons for veterans benefits.

Students who plan to use the Montgomery GI Bill are required to pay the full cost of tuition at the time of enrollment. Information concerning Education Benefits may be found at www.gibill.va.gov .

Requirements for receiving veterans educational benefits:

1. Every veteran or eligible dependent must contact the veterans' clerk in the Admissions office at (714) 241-6325.

2. Counseling is available to assist veterans with class selection and goal setting. Call the military counselor, Susan Winterbourne, at (714) 241-6320 or (866) 4CCCMIL (422-2645) x16320, or e-mail militarycounselor@cccd.edu.

3. It is mandatory that each veteran, veteran's dependent or widow who has registered for veterans educational benefits notify the veterans clerk when he or she adds or withdraws from classes.

4. Veterans Administration regulations require each eligible person to make satisfactory progress towards a stated objective. Failure to do so could result in termination of veterans educational benefits.

(17) Student Grievance Procedures
Coastline extends to all students the right to petition for redress of grievances. The right to petition may be initiated at any time when a student has a grievance against any employee, policy or procedure of Coastline. Grievance petitions are available in the Student Services office.
